I am deeply saddened to learn that Senator Alex Gallacher has passed away.
Throughout his career, Senator Gallacher was a robust advocate for Australian working families, driven by a profound belief that collective action could ensure safe, secure and well-paying jobs for all.
I am especially grateful for Senator Gallacher’s efforts to defend workers from assaults on their wages and conditions (including his role in the fight against Work Choices), and for sticking up for their right to retire in dignity by protecting and enhancing compulsory superannuation.
Senator Gallacher will be sorely missed by his fellow transport workers. He brought to the nation’s parliament the hands-on experience of their industry and was an unwavering advocate for them, especially when it came to their safety at work.
I join with Anthony Albanese and the entire Labor family in expressing my condolences to his wife, Paola, and all their loved ones.
